Obituary

Sally Lou Fiery, 87, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born Wednesday, May 9, 1934, in Elmira, NY, she was the daughter of the late Claude Douglas Williams and the late Mary (Ayers) Williams.

She graduated from Hagerstown Community College and later from Shepherd University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earned her master's degree in early childhood education from Shippensburg University. She was employed with the Washington County Board of Education as a special education teacher, where she taught at Potomac Heights Elementary, but spent most of her career teaching at Smithsburg Elementary, retiring in 1997 after 28 years. She was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she served on Church Council, Altar Guild, Evangelism Committee, Personnel Committee, and helped with Bible School. She was also a member of the AAUW, and the Washington County Retired Teachers Assn. Sally was awarded the HCC Community Service Award for her volunteer work, she also did volunteer tutoring for many children in the area. Sally demonstrated a deep dedication to her students and the many children she served from the former Kemp Horn Group Home in Smithsburg MD.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years Roger L. Fiery, Jr.; children; Roger L. Fiery, III & wife Cheryl of Phoenix, MD, Lisa M. Barrett and husband Fred and Douglas A. Fiery & wife Julie both of Hagerstown, MD; sister, Jacqueline McCarron of Honeybrook, PA; brother, Robert N. Williams of Calhoun, GA; grandchildren Matthew B. Fiery and wife Lynn, Ryan P. Barrett and wife Lindsey, Kristen E. Fiery and fiancé, J.D. Harrison, Mandy L. Fiery, Allyson S. Fiery and fiancé, Joe Brooke, Lauran A. Calin and husband Michael, and Andrew T. Fiery; and great-granddaughter, Olivia W. Fiery.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Sarah R. Williams, sister, JoAnn Daugherty and brother, Alan D. Williams.

Sally had many interests including serving as First Mate alongside her beloved Captain Roger while boating on the Chesapeake Bay. They shared many special times with family and friends aboard their boat. While she loved being on the water, Sally looked forward to spending time at home on their farm in Smithsburg often likening it to heaven. Celebrating God’s creation, Sally greeted each spring with displays of beautiful flowers. She also gained great enjoyment from her many beloved dogs and through viewing the daily visitors to their bird feeders.

Sally devoted many hours to scrapbooking. Her hope was to compile each family member’s special memories into their own book, gifting them with this unique account of their life. While she dedicated many hours to these activities, nothing was more important to her than spending time with her grandchildren.

Nana, as affectionately called by her family, loved creating fun and educational moments for each grandchild. She often could be found in her basement hosting “summer school” for them as well as organizing plays and puppet shows - nothing ever felt like work when it was done with Nana. There were many special moments that will live on in each grandchild’s memories.

Services will be held Monday, October 4, 2021, at 11:00 am, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. David B. Kaplan officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, October 3, 2021, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Interment will be at the Beaver Creek Cemetery, Beaver Creek, MD.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Washington County 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740; Breast Cancer Awareness of the Cumberland Valley 12916 Conamar Dr Ste 201, Hagerstown, MD 21742; or the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation National Headquarters ATTN: Financial Operations, 733 Third Avenue, Ste, 510, New York, NY 10017.

We never had much communication, but I remember my Grandmother Ayers always holding "the girls" up as people that we should try and grow up to be like. I'm glad that she had a good life and family and that she was appreciated by her family and friends. Many Bright Blessings Michele
