Obituary

Beloved father, son, and brother, Dick Roulette, passed away on November 8, 2021. Richard Ellsworth Roulette ("Dick"), born in Hagerstown, Maryland, was the son of Lois E. Roulette of Hagerstown and the late Robert E. Roulette.

Dick grew up in Washington County, attending local schools as an excellent student-athlete. In high school, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Boy Scout Troop 10. He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1971, after which he earned his Master's of Education from Seton Hall University. Dick also served in the Army Reserves for six years during that time.
Dick then taught school locally at Lincolnshire and E. Russel Hicks and served as President of the Washington County Teacher’s Association. During his lifetime, he worked at several restaurants - he co-owned Oliver's Restaurant and the Grille at Park Circle, and managed the Grille at Runways. He was elected to the Washington County Board of Commissioners, and served as President, Vice President, and Commissioner.

Dick loved golf and was known for the many championships that he won in the area and beyond. At Fountainhead Country Club, he was the longest tenured winner from 1981 to 2007, winning six titles. He was club champion at Beaver Creek Country Club five times. In 1989, he was instrumental in the opening of Black Rock Golf Course. In recent years, he also played at Waynesboro Country Club. In 2020, he was inducted to the Washington County Golf Hall of Fame. Dick made countless golfing friends throughout his life that meant so much to him.
Besides his mother, Lois E. Roulette, he is survived by his wife, Wendi Roulette, one cherished daughter, Madilyn Roulette, and his sister, Mary Roulette Flowers.

The family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD on Monday, November 15, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Services will be held privately with the family.

Dear Mrs. Roulette and Mary, My sister just informed me of your loss with the passing of Dick earlier this month. I was very saddened to learn of this as always hard to lose a child and brother at this stage of your lives. My sister and I remember all of the family gatherings throughout our lives; the golf with Dick and Mrs. Roulette and the lovely wedding at your family home. I know our Mom and Dad our sending their blessings from heaven as Dad always liked talking to Dick about golf, etc. Mary- still remember fondly my trip to visit you in Japan.... would be difficult now to get back in that kimono and attempt to walk. Sure hope you are staying healthy with your family Mark and same for your Mom. I got married in July 2020 to my 8 yr fiancee and we loved from Southern California to Florida in August, 2020. Great place for golf yet we are both still working. Again, heartfelt prayers to both of you! Warm regards, Linda Strine

Dick was one of best friends in High School classes and football. My younger brothers were good friends with Dick through golf. After college, I moved to Frederick to have a shorter commute to the DC area for work. Just that short distance is enough to loose contact with friends and this is also true for all the other HS friends. I know Dick is doing what he loves best in Heaven!

I heard the sad news about Mr. Roulette on Facebook while on a trip in Costa Rica. I cannot express enough how Mr. Roulette, who was my teacher at Lincolnshire, completely turned my life around and put me on the straight and narrow path. Certainly, there would be some turns but without Mr. Roulette's influence on a kid growing in the section 8 housing in Halfway Manor, I know I sure would not be celebrating with my children in a place as beautiful as Costa Rica today. My father was mentally ill, my mother was trying to make it working in a world when women were barely working, and the positive role model of Mr. Roulette was the difference I needed in my world. i am sure his family knows far better than me what a great man he was. I am deeply saddened by the passing of a great man who lived a life that I am sure was Pura Vida, as they say here in Costa Rica. Fly well on your wings Mr. Roulette Jeff

Dear Lois and Family, Kay and I wish to express condolences for your loss. As you know I'm avid golfer and had the privilege of playing with Dick on a number of occasions. He was always the A player and I was the D but, he always treated me as an equal. A true gentleman and great guy to be with. It was a honor to know him. With love, Gene and Kay Ogilvie

My sincerest condolences to Dick's family. We were classmates at South High and friends later. I always thought of him as "Dickie", but that probably wasn't appropriate as an adult with all that he accomplished. Born 3 days before me, it just isn't right that we've lost him so early. Play through, Dick. ⛳
