Obituary

Richard (Dick/Mac) E. McCleary passed away on August 29, 2022.  Born in Hagerstown, MD on January 3, 1944, Dick was the son of the late Isabelle Louise and Samuel Jacob McCleary.

As a life-long entrepreneur, Dick ran successful businesses for over 55 years.  He began his career as the owner/operator of Richard McCleary Custom Build Homes, where he earned a reputation for quality and detail.  Many of the fine homes he built can be found in Hagerstown and the surrounding area.  He expanded into Residential Development and, as the owner of McCleary and Earley, he developed many Business Parks, numerous Government Office Buildings for the IRS, US Coast Guard, Social Security Administration and USDA.  He also developed warehouses for major companies like Pepsi-Cola, Fairchild Industries and CertainTeed.  Dick owned the Miller Lumber Company for over 40 years, a company that was in operation for more than 140 years.

Dick was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School.  During his long and distinguished career, he served on many boards, including; Blue Ridge Bank, St. James School, Hagerstown Boy Scouts, the Hagerstown branch of the American Red Cross, Maryland Black Rock Golf Course and Fountain Head Country Club.  While all of these organizations were important to Dick, perhaps most dear to his heart was his long service with the Hagerstown Housing Authority.  Dick was one of two board members of the Hagerstown Housing Authority honored with the naming of McCleary Hill, a new residential community.

Dick enriched so many lives with his generosity and kindness.  He was a visionary and could always see a way to make things better.  No one was a more devoted son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Dick is survived by his loving wife Mary Pat; daughters Tracy Lynne McCleary and Marcie Ann McCleary; step-son Brian Klick (Caroline); Grandsons Benjiman McCleary Schindel (Samantha) and Coulter Michael; Granddaughter Kaitlyn Klick; Great Grandsons Wesson Schindel and Wyatt Schindel; sister Darlene Semler (Joe); a special nephew Jeff Semler; Mother and Father-In-Law Joseph C. and Elizabeth A. Mace, Sr.; Brothers and Sisters-In-Law Joseph Mace, Jr. (Barbara), Tim Mace (Bobbi), Andrew Mace (Raman), Carol Cuddihy (Glenn), Anne Boley (Michael), Linda Rosenberg (Ryan); Nieces and Nephews; and his very special fur friend “Buddy.” He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara McCleary Zeger.

I would like to express my gratitude to Mr.McCleary for his kindness and loving heart for all. As a young man, Mr.McCleary set an example for me to follow. “Work Hard-PlayHard”. I know he always loved all us kids because he always took time to ask how we were doing. He never sugar coated anything, but gave us guidance and direction in a way that we could relate to. I will carry his inspiration with me always and be sure to listen for his guidance because I am sure he is telling people as we speak how to make things better. With all my love to his family Love Mark Harne
