Melvin Leo Weaver Sr. of Smithsburg, MD, born April 29, 1937, passed away at his home on April 14, 2022.
Mr. Weaver was born in Funkstown, MD to Paul Raymond Weaver Sr. and Mary Etta (Shank) Weaver. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Greenland. Upon returning from the service, he and his wife began their family and he worked various jobs to support them. He retired from Loomis Armored and Giant Foods in 1989. Later in life, he began driving for Younger Toyota and serving at Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, MD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond, Donald, Paul, Clyde, and Ned, and sisters Pearl Ridenour, Vivian Huff, Dorothy Heitt, and Orabelle McLucas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Kathryn (Wallech) Weaver, son Melvin Leo Weaver Jr. and wife Denice, son Curtis Weaver and wife Dawn, son Darren Weaver and wife Cassandra, daughter Lori Shifflett and husband Steve, and son Eric Weaver and wife Lisa. He is also survived by grandson Brandon Weaver of Tacoma, WA, grandson Justin Weaver and wife Erin of Hagerstown, MD, granddaughter Brittany Weaver of Pittsburgh, PA, grandson Wade Weaver and wife Amber of Hagerstown, MD, Kinsey Shifflett of Baltimore, MD, Kristin Weaver of Hagerstown, MD, Hart Weaver and wife Rachel of Hagerstown, MD, Brett Weaver of Raleigh, NC, Cole Shifflett of Smithsburg, MD, Connor Weaver of Smithsburg, MD, and Molly Weaver of Smithsburg, MD. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren and a very large extended family.
Mr. Weaver was an enthusiastic supporter of his children and grandchildren’s athletic endeavors. He was sure to attend every game and meet, often the loudest fan in the stands. To support his sons’ many years in baseball, he served in various leadership positions for the Smithsburg Little Sluggers organization. Members of Bethel United Methodist Church for 30 years, he and his wife dedicated countless hours serving the church and its members. One thread always ran through his commitments - his love for his family.

My deepest sympathies to the Weaver family on the passing of their loved one, Melvin. I grew up in Funkstown and knew the Weaver family. Melvin was in my class throughout our school years. He was such a nice person when I knew him and it appears he continued that way through his life. May he rest in the Peace of the Lord and may God give his family comfort at this difficult time.
