Obituary

Mary Frances Usary (“Jimmy Jo”), 95, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, November 3, 2020, at Doey's House in Hagerstown, MD.

Born Saturday, October 31, 1925 in Fairmont, WV, she was one of four daughters of the late James Matthew Ryan and the late Lois (Coffman) Ryan. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Clyde Usary in 2010.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Usary Sauder and husband Paul of Greencastle, PA and Sally Usary Wilson and husband Dan of Middletown, MD; sister, Lois Ann Bruch of Wooster, OH; three grandchildren, Paige Penrod of Chambersburg, PA, Peri Penrod of Lancaster, PA and Olivia Wilson of Middletown, MD and two great grandchildren, Azlynn and Auren Ulsh of Chambersburg, PA.
Before marriage and children, Mary was a sharp working woman and was employed with both a local bank and WMMN radio station in Fairmont, WV. She had a beautiful voice and was often asked to sing at weddings, was involved in local theatre, acting in several plays, and was even chosen as a 1947 Glamour Girl by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of which she was a member. Because of her evident charm she was also a Poster girl for the “Your Blood Can Save Him Campaign” for the servicemen in Marion County during World War II.

Mary married Richard Usary on June 14, 1953 in Fairmont, WV. Later than most in life, and to their delight and surprise, Mary and Richard were blessed with two daughters and Mary quit working to raise them. She kept a beautiful and welcoming home in Hagerstown MD.

Throughout her entire life Mary remained elegant in her presentation and her family loved that she was broad-minded in her thinking - especially for someone in her generation. She was a fiercely loving and dedicated mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary will forever be remembered by her family including her nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Washington County and their dedicated and caring staff for all that they did for Mary. They are also especially thankful for JoAnn Sweeney, Mary’s friend, caregiver and constant companion in her last months.

Private graveside services will held with the family at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery in Flintstone, MD.

There will be a celebration of Mary's life to be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD.

What a beautifully written tribute to a wonderful woman. I had forgotten about her singing, and I never knew she had worked for a bank and radio station. She had so many exciting and different chapters in her life. She was such a great role model, loving person, and a joy to be around. Thinking of you all during this time--sending much love.

Aunt Jimmy Jo’s obituary was beautiful . I learned a few things about her that I did not know. She was a wonderful aunt and always loved staying with her as a little girl and as I got older. She shared her make up table and costume jewelry to Susan and I to our delight! I loved her dearly.
