Obituary

Lynn Alan Shuman, 73, of Williamsport, MD, passed into peaceful eternity, Saturday, November 19, 2022 at Meritus Medical Center. Born February 8, 1949, he was the son of the late Charles and Cleva Shuman of Funkstown, MD.

Upon graduating from South Hagerstown High School, he served in the US Air Force, obtaining the rank of sergeant. He was stationed at CCK Airbase, Taiwan and made two trips to Vietnam. After his military tour he studied Automation and Instrumentation Electronics and graduated from Commercial Trades Institute.

Lynn retired from the Federal Service after 35 years and working at the NIST 20 megawatt, NBSR-1 Nuclear Research Reactor as part of the NCNR Reactor Engineering and Research teams, maintaining, designing, and calibrating specialized electronic instrumentation. He also served as a member of the NIST Racetrack Microtron (RTM) development team. During this time he received and shared several awards including The Department of Commerce Gold Medal, The DOC Silver Medal and American Heart Association CPR lifesaving award. After his Federal retirement he worked for the City of Hagerstown as an electronic instrumentation technician from 2008 until 2012. A lifetime member of Community Rescue Service, Lynn served as Chief from 1990-1993.

Water was always calling to Lynn. Either through water skiing behind 'Gee-Wizz' on the Potomac in his younger years, to living on their cruiser 'Anti-Matter' on the Chesapeake Bay during the summer, to going on vacation cruises to Bermuda, The Caribbean, Canada, Mexico and Hawaii; he loved boating and the ocean.

One of Lynn's passions was cruises. With 33 completed cruises under his belt as experience, he served at an 'Independent Cruise Consultant' for a major cruise vacation discount company and loved to book and set up cruise vacations for people.

A lifetime 'Patron' member of the NRA, and certified firearm instructor, Lynn enjoyed recreational shooting sports and was an avid target shooting competitor for several years. Another love was playing drums and classic rock and played in several local bands. He loved to see and make people laugh and always had a joke to tell.

Lynn was preceded in death by his brother, Larry K. Shuman of Portland, OR, and newborn baby brother. He is survived by his amazing, loving wife of over 52 years, Laura Elaine (Reynolds) Shuman; devoted son, Christopher Shuman of Hancock; daughter. Lorie Lynnette Laboy; and grandson, Sawyer Shuman.

Services will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, with Pastor Tim Fisher officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD.

I am so sorry for the loss of Lynn. I remember sitting at CRS with Lynn on Friday overnights and hearing his stories and jokes. We had our share of bad calls. I remember two calls that I thought we were going to die or bust out laughing. My condolences to you Elaine and the family.
