Jay Garrett Mills , 43, of  Clear Spring, MD, passed away, Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Doey's House.

Born Saturday, January 6, 1979 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of Shirley L. (Moore) Mills of Clear Spring, MD and the late Garrett C. Mills Jr.

"When Jay was eight years old," he began working with his Dad and Pappy Hank at Shady Bower Sunoco Service Station, where he continued to work part time until this past summer. Jay graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1997. After high school, he went to work for the Washington County Sheriff's Office as a dispatcher until he entered the Western Maryland Police Training Academy, which he graduated from in June of  2000. He was employed with the Sheriff's Office for 25 years retiring on December 1, 2021. Jay was a very active member of the Clear Spring American Legion SAL for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Stony Cabin Rod and Gun Club, Fraternal Order of Police and the Potomac Fish and Game Club. Jay enjoyed all things sports, especially the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed boating on the Potomac River and spending time at the cabin. His hobbies included playing cards, watching movies in his recliner, shooting guns and admiring his perfectly striped lawn. More than anything his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

Jay is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ami  R. Mills; two daughters, Brenna R. Mills and Chloe J. Mills both of Clear Spring, MD. One sister, April Shupp and husband Sid of Clear Spring, MD; brother-in-law, Brian Itnyre of Big Pool, MD; father and mother-in-law, Steven and Kathy Itnyre of Hagerstown, MD; four nieces, Ella and Blake Shupp, and Aubrey and Bristol Itnyre; several aunts, uncles and cousins; his law enforcement family; Tyler Hebert and Michael Myers; and finally his canine companion Chase.

He was preceded in death by his father, Garrett C. Mills Jr.; paternal grandparents, Garrett (Hank) Sr. and Louise Mills; maternal grandparents, Roger and Ruth Moore; and canine companions, Bailey and Shadow.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.

Jay and I were cadets together in the police academy. He made the academy director earn his pay lol. Jay was the class clown and always looking for a way to have fun. When it came time to take care of business, Jay was right there. He had your six. Jay was a kind, gentle and caring person. I will miss him dearly. May God give him eternal rest. To his wife Ami, daughters Brenna and Chole I am so sorry for your loss.

Jay Mills was one of the best! He was a great husband, father, son, son-in-law, uncle, brother-in-law, friend and police officer. He wore many hats and did it all with humility. Jay will be missed but never forgotten. One can only think that he made the world a better place to live and sacrificed much of his time on earth in doing so. I’m sure he and his dad are enjoying each other again, maybe even having a cold one. RIP my friend.
