Ernestine Josephine Ashton, 93, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Monday, September 21, 2020, at Doey's House.
Born Monday, June 23, 1927 in Geneva, NY, she was the daughter of the late John Polce and the late Josephine (Del Papa) Polce.
She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, the local Garden Club and the Homemaker's Club of Cavetown, MD and the Woman's Club of Virginia. Ernie was proud to have been employed with the FBI. Ernie loved life to the fullest, such as white water rafting and glacier climbing, and enjoyed making memories with her friends and family. She also traveled to 46 countries with her husband. She enjoyed oil painting and sculpting and donated a sculpture of three Christmas Carolers to the White House, where it was on display.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Held and husband Charles of Hagerstown, MD; son, Dennis Ashton and wife Maria of Herndon, VA; sister, Matilda Lazio; two granddaughters, Melissa Cole and husband Andrew, and Candice Money; two grandsons, Stephen Held and wife, Adrienne, and Justin Ashton; and five great-grandchildren, Maddie, Max, Ashton, Amelia and Evan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Lee Ashton and brothers, Tony Polce, Johnny Polce, Ponzi Polce and Rudy Polce.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10:00 am, at the St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Avenue Hagerstown, MD, with Msgr. J. Bruce Jarboe as celebrant.
Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, Friday, September 25, 2020, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Interment will be held privately at the Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.

Aunt Ernie was a beautiful woman and just a joy to be around her. I have a lot of good memories of her and Uncle Arnold when all of us would get together. I loved her and how she could make anyone feel comfortable; she will be missed dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Cindy and Dennis and keep her memories going and pass them on.

I will miss my monthly phone calls with Ernie. She always had a positive attitude about life and shared many fond memories of she and mom. She always mentioned how thankful she was of her family and a good life. I will miss her.
