Obituary

Carol Adriene Gruver, 86, of Falling Waters, WV passed away, Monday, May 31, 2021 at Hospice of the Panhandle In-Patient Care Center.  Born June 14, 1934, in Great Cacapon, WV, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Gladys (Spring) Dent.

Carol spent most of her career working with special needs children at Washington County Development Center for Handicapped and Marshall Street School.  While her children were young, Carol belonged to Emmanuel United Methodist Church.  During her time there she served as Superintendent of Sunday School and worked with the youth.  She later joined Otterbein United Methodist Church, in Hagerstown, where she continued her volunteer work helping with the REACH Shelter and after school Program.  Carol stayed connected to her early Catholic upbringing by attending Mass on occasion.  She was affectionately known as “Ammaw” to her grandchildren and loved nothing more than spending time with them.

Carol is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jake, their children; Dana Smiles and husband Bob, Paula Browning and husband Buck, David Gruver and daughter-in-law Michele; eight grandchildren; Bobby, David, Shannon, Samantha, Brittany, Sarah, Emma, Madelyn, great-grandchildren; Shiloh, Mia, Loran, Cameron, Austin, Bowie, Hope, Ava, and Rocky; siblings Dale Hough and Hugh Dent, as well as several nieces and nephews.  Carol and Jake were involved with Quincy and subsequently Delores Kendall, her sister’s Vonnie and Donna Hammond, became an extended part of the family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Peg Miltich, Joan Dent and Joyce Lamp.

A service to remember and honor Carols’ life will be held at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, Saturday June 12, 2021, at 11:00 am.  Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  A time of fellowship will be held, immediately following the service.

Carol donated her body to West Virginia University Human Gift Registry, supporting health sciences teaching and research missions.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, nolanrobinsonfoundation.org, or a charity of your choice.

Joanna and I send our heartfelt condolences to the entire family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I've known Carol since the mid '80's. I remember how she and Jake welcomed me into their home during a college weekend trip with Dave our freshman year. There were many other times that I saw or spoke to her over the years. I always looked forward to seeing her. To say that Carol was special would be an understatement. Without a doubt, she was one of the sweetest, most caring and sincere people I've known. We will miss her a great deal. With love and sincerity, Charlie and Joanna
