Carlos Gilberto Alvarez, 84, of Hagerstown, MD peacefully passed away of natural causes in his home on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

Carlos was born on February 1, 1937 in Iquique, Chile.  He was the son of the late Carlos Roberto Alvarez and Fresia Alvarez Azan.  Carlos was a loving husband of 63 years to Raquel Galvez Alvarez.  His dream was to learn English and move to the United States.  Shortly after his marriage in 1958 in Iquique, Chile , Carlos was sponsored by an American demolition company, Loizeaux, to work in the United States. He and his family immigrated to the United States where Carlos was able to pursue his dreams and make them a reality.  He was an alumni of Iquique English College in Chile and later obtained his Associates Degree in Accounting from Baltimore City College.  He worked in shipping and logistics for various companies at the Port of Baltimore before moving to Hagerstown, MD in 1983, where he worked as Traffic Manager for C.M. Offray & Sons for over 25 years.  Carlos was an avid fan of soccer, baseball, football, boxing, golf, and was often spotted cutting the rug at parties.

Carlos is survived by his wife, Raquel Galvez Alvarez; his son Marco A. Alvarez and wife Michele Alvarez; son Carlos G. Alvarez Jr; daughter Jennifer R. Alvarez; and his grandchildren Marcelo A. Alvarez and Marco A. Alvarez II.  He was brother to the late Iris Monterrey Alvarez, Berta Alvarez, and Juan Alvarez and wife Louise Alvarez; cousin to Anna Maria Pino, Mario Gonzalez and wife Carolyn Gonzalez; and caring, loving uncle to Maria Ester Alvarez, Nora Fresia Monterrey Alvarez, Ivan Gonzalez, Jose Gonzalez, Lisa Gonzalez, Jaime Gonzalez, and Robert Bennett.  He was also very loved in Chile by extended family consisting of multiple brother/sister in-laws and children of the Galvez family.  He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

A viewing is scheduled for 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, January 9 at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD.  A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 10 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.  Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at 444 Links View Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
