Obituary

Camilla Frances (Girard) Corbin, born in 1943 in Oakland, California, passed away on April 4, 2020 in Hagerstown at the age of 77.

Known to friends and family as Cam, she majored in Anthropology and minored in Art at the University of California, Berkeley, where she met her husband as well as many lifelong friends.

Art remained Cam’s passion throughout her lifetime. She became an accomplished oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel artist; and used her knowledge of color and style to achieve respect and recognition in the fiber arts. She was a remarkably talented fiber artist: If it required a needle, Cam could do it!

Cam and her husband raised their daughter in Santa Cruz, California, volunteering at Susan’s school and clubs. Returning to work, Cam became an office manager in a physical therapy practice. Over time, she leveraged her skills to start a thriving practice management consultancy.

Cam was always a crusader, a fierce advocate for the under-represented. She championed women’s rights by participating in both Soroptimist International and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Cam enjoyed donating to a variety of animal rescues as well; she loved her pets!

Upon retirement, she contributed her skills and expertise to the organizations she was passionate about, continuing a lifetime of volunteerism by leading classes for members and for the public through outreach programs.

She had a green thumb, and all her life she cultivated all kinds of growing things. Accustomed to the climate in California, Maryland presented her with gardening challenges. She loved her rose bushes and was determined to keep them growing in this climate. During her last few years, asthma made it difficult for her to be as active outside as she wanted to be, but she made sure those roses grew and thrived.

Cam is survived by her husband Steve and daughter Susan, and by her brother John Girard and his family.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Cam’s name to your favorite charity.

A celebration of Cam's life will be held Sunday, June 27, 2021 at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD. Steve and Susan will greet family and friends from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm, followed by a time of remembrance at 2:30 pm.  In honor of Cam, the family encourages you to wear her favorite color purple.

Guest Book

Cam was the first to really make me feel welcome in the AAUW. She was friendly and interesting. More than that, she was a genuinely nice person. Over time we grew to develop a friendship. She became a trusted confidant. Even after I moved from Maryland, we emailed almost every day. I valued her friendship and I miss her.
