Obituary

Annie L. Royster was born in Halifax County, North Carolina on February 04, 1929 to Jack Brown and Annie Laura Shaw Brown.  She was the 6th of 9 children in the following order:  Melvin, Herman, Lois, Jackson, Clemetine, Annie, Clifton, Harold, and Helen.  The early years were spent growing up in Littleton, N. Carolina, receiving her education at McIver high school and graduating from Winston-Salem State University of N. Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education.

She married her high school sweetheart, William E. Royster, Sr at her father’s home in Halifax County, N. Carolina on August 11, 1956.  They enjoyed 41 years of marriage bliss and 3 children:  Gwendolyn Ann, William Edward, Jr., and Samuel John.

She was an elementary school teacher in the public school system in Woodbridge, New Jersey educating students in 2nd grade for most of her career and then toward retirement she taught remedial reading and math from grades 1 - 6.

Annie was faithful to God in the Christian warfare.  She was reared in a Christian home where her parents taught the religious principles and moral, ethical values that shaped her early life.  Once baptized she did not waver.  She served in multiple positions within the church, which included, but not limited to, Sabbath School teacher and superintendent, Youth group director and Deaconess.  She helped establish a church for the glory of God in New Brunswick, NJ.

Annie passed away to her rest in the early morning hours of January 03, 2021 at her home in Hagerstown, Maryland.  It was due to gradual declining health that she finally succumbed.

Annie Laura Royster has passed on a legacy to her children at home and in the classroom of the value of a good education, integrity and being a man (woman) of principle, perseverance, and Christian commitment.  She was a wonderful role model as a provider for her children, her parents, and her husband.  To know her was to love her.  She was humble, kind-hearted, loving, exhibited a warm, sweet personality, and would always deny herself to help others.

Now that the baton of faith has passed on to us, her family, who are still in the race, we need to carry it high across the finish line of heaven.  And, with God’s help, we might all exclaim like Paul, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day…” II Timothy 4:7,8.

She leaves to cherish her memory:  Her children, one daughter and son-in-law, Gwendolyn Ann and Gregory Edward Rush of Hagerstown, MD;  two sons and daughters-in-law, William Edward Jr and Lisa Marie Royster of Hagerstown, MD and Samuel John and Daniella E. Royster of San Jose, CA;  one sister and brother-in-law, Clemetine and Hugene Fields of Gatesville, NC;  6 grandchildren, Michael and Brian Jemison, and William III, Christopher, Alyssa Royster, and Ariana Royster;  one great grand-daughter, Haven Jemison; and a vast host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 1:00 PM at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD with Pastor Michael Edwards and Pastor, Dr. Kenneth Anderson officiating

Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick, NJ.

To Gwen, William & Samuel, We extend our deepest condolences as we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 "Brothers, I want you to know the truth of what I told you when I was with you. Your loved ones who have died are sleeping in Christ. Don't grieve over them as people grieve over their dead, as if there were no hope." :17 -"When Jesus Christ descends from heaven, He, as the archangel, will give a shout of command - the trumpet, call of God to the dead - and the dead in Christ will rise first." Let us not forget these promises. Because we are believers in God, your mother will be among the dead in Christ to rise first and whether we are among the dead or remain alive we will be changed and together we will be caught up in the sky to meet the Lord in the air, and from then on, we will all be with the Lord. Now, that is something worth looking forward to. We continue to pray for you while you mourn the loss of your mom. We Love You Guys! Keep Hope Alive! Rudolph & Andrea Wiley

Memories of my Aunt Ann ... an educator with a warm heart, quiet demeanor but when she spoke you could not help but listen. When she looked at me I felt she could see my soul. When she smiled she would light up the room! I was always well behaved as a child when around my Uncle William and Aunt Ann. Well behaved because I did not want to feel their wrath if I misbehaved. I grieve with the rest of my cousins for the loss of a true family matriarch. However, I rejoice in knowing the profound positive impact she has had on her children in their home and her children in the classroom. I rejoice in knowing that she is home and suffers know more.

We met Sister Royster in her senior years. She was a quiet woman who always wore a serene expression and was quietly composed, the kind of Christian surrounded with an aura of hope and trust in Jesus, a woman of faith so much needed in these unsettling last days. Our hope and prayer is to see her in full vigor and to fellowship with her in the earth made new. Faith & Edward Crumbly, Jr.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of our beloved Annie L. Royster. Her faith in God was a true legacy for her children and grandchildren. I am grateful for the support and encouragment that she extended. When I lost my brother, Reginald in 1996, she and her late husband, William, Sr. were very supportive and first to arrive or homegoing services as they were in 1993 when I eulogized my uncle, Cleveland Brown. I always received a phone call each time she received our family newsletter and she commended me for my efforts to keep the family informed and connected. So grateful we were able to recognize her at our family reunion in 2019. My sincere sympathies are extended to her children and grandchildren and sister, Clementine B. Fields. May she rest in peace!
