Robert Bruce Young, 69, of 10208 Bear Creek Drive, Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Friday, June 7, 2019, at the Meritus Medical Center.
Born Monday, July 4, 1949 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late William Young and the late Rosalind (Strickler) Young.
He graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD and later attended the University of Maryland. He was employed with the Federal Government as a Library Technician at the Library of Congress, retiring in 2011 after 39 years of service. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, MD and also a member of TOPS #0446. Bruce was very proud of his Scottish heritage and a direct descendent of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. He was recently an active volunteer in the campaign to elect David Trone to Congress. Bruce enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Scotland and Alaska with his wife. Many "date nights" were spent at the arts and entertainment venues of Music Makers, Gallery 50 and 42 West Arts in Waynesboro, PA. Bruce was an avid reader and book collector, Civil War buff and Bible scholar. He also enjoyed watching movies, dining out, attending music concerts, plays and spectator sports, especially the Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He is survived by his wife Sue Ann Young; aunt, Nora Belle Comer of Luray, VA; uncle, Durwood Comer of Luray, VA; cousins, Linda Kaye (Frank) Good of Luray, VA; Minnie (Miles) Snyder of Luray, VA; special feline children, Chester, Smokey Joe and Dolly.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia "Ginger" (Strickler) Lee and a cousin, Lee Roy Strickler.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 2:00 pm at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 1020 Maryland Avenue, Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Christopher Serufusa officiating.
Interment will be private.
