Mary Catherine Caniford, 84, of Stonecroft Ct., Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Saturday, November 2, 2019, at Doey's House, surrounded by her family and friends.
Born Sunday, July 28, 1935 in Charleston, WV, she was the daughter of the late Elston Hess and the late Isabelle (Medlar) Hess.
She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1953. She worked in the restaurant and food service most of her life. Mary was known and loved by many. She was a past member of New Life MCC Church, where she volunteered for the Homeless Breakfast program. She delivered meals for Food and Friends Organization for several years. While her children were young, Mary was a Girl Scout Leader for Troop 227. She was like a mom to many of the kids on Ray St. Mary was an avid Washington Redskins fan, loved professional wrestling, Elvis and Conway Twitty. She enjoyed playing Bingo and Saturday night dinners with her friends at Stonecroft, and listening to her favorite local band, The Cruisers. A favorite past time was looking at clouds and creating images and looking for cardinals.
She is survived by her children, Dixie L. Pheil and Jeffrey, Tina L. Caniford and Pat, Lisa V. Wishard, Porky E. Caniford and Susie, Jeff C. Caniford and Mary all of Hagerstown, MD; brother, Harry E. Hess and sister, Elsie L. Bishop both of WV; 11 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren with 1 on the way; numerous nieces and nephews and friend, David DeCarlo.
She was preceded in death by her son, Frank William Merrbaugh, Jr., brother, Elston F. Hess, and sisters, Sue Renner and Linda E. Williamson.
Services will be held Friday, November 8, 2019, at 11:00 am, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD, with Pastor Deb Coggin officiating.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Thursday, November 7, 2019, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
Interment will be at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Doey's House 11370 Caring Pathway Lane, Hagerstown, MD, 21742.

Mom, you were there for me when no one else was, thank you for loving my writings and my poetry to which I've written you many, thank you for seeing something in me that first breakfast morning when I had lost all hope, thank you for pulling me from the bowels of hell. I'll remember you coming to visit, our phone calls, going dancing and no matter what always liking you hair when I did it, the word "Mom " is a noun but the meaning of Mom where your concerned is Angel, I'll always be greatful to your family.
