John William Smith , 79, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the Meritus Medical Center.

Born Monday, August 7, 1939 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Howard Smith and the late Leona May (Wiles) Wilhelm.

He graduated from North Hagerstown High School. John retired from Pangborn and was also employed with Certain-Teed, Rustoleum and Kohl's. He served in the Army Reserves for 4 years and was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lois E. Smith; daughter, Tammy Walker and boyfriend, Jeff Delauter of Hagerstown, MD; son, Christopher Smith, Sr. and wife, Gloria of Hagerstown, MD; sister, Susie Wilson of GA; step sister, Sharon Armstrong of MD; step brother, George Thomas Wilhelm of MD; step sister, Frances Harshman of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren, Tiffany, Courtney and boyfirend Nick Corba, Chad, Christopher, Jr; step-grandchild, Sam; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Grayson, and Eva.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys Bingaman and Judy Wolfe; and step sister Helen Bond.

Services will be held Friday, November 30, 2018, at 1:00 pm, at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Nancy Green officiating.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday, November 30, 2018, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

Interment will be at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation, 1301 York Rd.  Suite 404, Lutherville, MD, 21093.
