Gladys Burlene (Babington) Charles, age 92, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away at Doey’s House on November 30, 2019. She was born July 7, 1927 in Appletown, Maryland to the late Frank B. and Nellie C. (Kephart) Babington. Gladys (“Dooks”) grew up with seven siblings on farms in Boonsboro, Maryland. She graduated from Boonsboro High School in 1945 and began working at the Pangborn Corporation in the Mail/Advertising Department until she married, and her first daughter was born. She then became the bookkeeper for the family businesses, Charles’ Sunoco, Boone Gas Mart and Boone Kar Kleen. She was a former longtime member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Boonsboro. She volunteered for the Brownies, Girl Scouts and Pangborn School PTA and cafeteria while staying home to raise her daughters. Gladys enjoyed bowling, since 1957, in the Ladies’ Suburban Duckpin Bowling League until her passing. She was a talented seamstress, sewing curtains for her home and clothes for her three daughters and their dolls. She enjoyed playing “500” card game with a group of women in her neighborhood for many years. Gladys took pride in her yard that was always trimmed and well-landscaped with beautiful flowers. She was a great downhome cook who was famous for her delicious roast beef. After she and her husband, Jack, retired in the 1980s, they vacationed around the country in a motorhome, enjoying winters in Florida and making lifelong friends in the Vogue Motorhome Club. She was always up for new adventures and lived a full life into her 90s.
Gladys is survived by three daughters, Vicki L. Lumm (Marty), Jill M. Spalding (Steve) and Gina K. Kauffman (Curtis), all of Hagerstown; three grandsons, Brian C. Lumm (Kristin) of Boonsboro, Michael P. Spalding (Kimmie) of Waxahachie, Texas, and Logan C. Kauffman of Hagerstown; and great-grandsons Henry A. Lumm and Michael P. Spalding, II. She is also survived by sister Evelyn Gaver and brothers Harold Babington, Kenneth Babington and Gary Babington (Patsy). Gladys was predeceased by her husband Jack M. Charles; two grandsons, Kevin M. Lumm and Steven K. Spalding, II; sister Janet Babington Stouffer, and brothers Leo Babington and Richard Babington. The family sincerely thanks the wonderful and caring staff of Hospice and Doey’s House that supported Gladys and her family during her illness and passing.
Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 5 at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home before the service from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Maugansville Ruritan Club in care of “Kevin’s Fund”, P.O. Box 44, Maugansville, Maryland 21767-0044 or Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742.
