Gertrude Harriet Downey, 92, of Williamsport, MD, passed away, Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at Homewood at Williamsport.
Born Sunday, March 27, 1927 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late William Howard Roney and the late Mary Elizabeth (Seibert) Roney.
Harriet attended Hagerstown High School and Penn Hall School and graduated from Syracuse University in 1949. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, Women's Club, DAR- Conococheague Chapter, Crossroads Garden Club, and Fountain Head Country Club. She was also a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church and served on the Alter Guild. Harriet enjoyed traveling, gardening and flower arranging, needlework, reading and cooking.
She is survived by her children, Suzanne D. Rutledge & husband Fred of Cornelius, NC, Martha E. Fritz & husband Steve of Glen Allen, VA, Norman B. Downey & wife Beth of Richmond, VA; eight grandchildren, two great grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Bradford Wyckoff Downey.
Services will be held Friday, November 8, 2019, at 11:00 am, at the John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 North Potomac Street Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Katie O'Hern Hamilton officiating.
Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, Thursday, November 7, 2019, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Private interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Clear Spring, MD.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hilltop Assisted Living at Homewood and Hospice of Washington County for the exceptional care they provided.
