My husband, Art Shanklin, knew George for decades. My most vivid memory is when George personally drove Art to the ER for stitches as a result of a fall on the golf course ... in the middle of their round of golf! At that time, we lived just a block away and it would have been easy for Art to come home and have me take him for stitches. Don't know many who would have been so thoughtful and caring. Art said that while he was touched, he was not at all surprised by George's kindness. George was the best type of human being ... the one who does the right thing when nobody is looking.
My condolences to everyone. So sorry to read about your loss.

My sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Newman. I was a patient of the practice for over 30 years & an ER nurse at WCH. Dr. Newman was one of those special physicians that kept all of his patient’s information right in his head. If I called him about one of his patients he told me exactly what their history was without having to look at a chart. I have many fond memories as both a patient & a colleague. Dr. Newman you will be missed.
It was my pleasure to have worked with a physician of the quality of Dr. Newman. And he had a great sense of humor, too. May the Lord send the Comforter to ease the profound feelings of loss to the family. Joyce Hill-Hanna RN retired

Dr. Newman was an inspiring doctor, for a recent "older" hired nurse, in 1976. Patience, in communicating with staff as well as the patient, and their family - he personified the doctor all wanted to be caring for them, personally. AND all of the staff I knew, were willing to learn from him and to help him accomplish whatever was needed for the patient's care. God bless the family who sacrificed their home life with him, to let us know him and work with him - many hours taken from his home life. Rest in peace - lessons learned - thank you, Dr. Newman.

Dr. Newman provided excellent care with compassion and insight for many years. We are especially mindful of his immediate response to a call placed to his office regarding an illness while we were out of the country on vacation. We extend our deepest sympathies to his entire family for the loss of this dedicated practitioner as well as an equally dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.

My sympathy to the family of Dr. Newman. He was a wonderful physician and teacher. As a new nurse in a new town he welcomed me and was a great role model for integrity and dedication to the health of the folks in Washington County. He will be remembered by many.

To the Newman Family~ In my eyes, Dr. Newman was the best in this area that has ever been. He treated my entire family for many many years. Most importantly, he treated my father. He nursed him through "several lives". When he needed an artificial valve, "Doc" knew the specialist for the job. When he became ill again, "Doc" knew Dad needed a pacemaker. When he bled from his kidney and lost several pints of blood, "Doc" nursed him through a long recovery period. It was then that my mother and I sat in his office and had the most special conversation about Dad. Then "Doc" retired. Dad's last "life" was a brain aneurysm and although it was his last and "Doc" was retired, my mother received the most beautiful note from the greatest "Doc" ever. He spoke of my father in the highest. I can't imagine how you all feel, but I KNOW Hagerstown has lost the best there was. Rest in peace "Doc".
