Albert Francis Rokus, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving wife and family. Al was born on December 26, 1925 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, to the late Frank Rokus and the late Susan (Mattie) Rokus Sedon. Frank passed while Al was at an early age, and he was raised by his late stepfather John Sedon.
Al was a 1944 graduate of Hazelton High School and worked at Hazelton Heating and Plumbing for several years before relocating to Stratford, Connecticut. While living in Connecticut, Al was a helicopter mechanic for Sikorsky Aircraft where he worked on the Presidential helicopters, including Marine One. Additionally, Al was a member of the Sikorsky Aircraft Fire Brigade. After 29 years of service at Sikorsky, Al retired and moved to Hagerstown, Maryland to be near his grandchildren, who fondly call him “Pop”. Al had a love for sports, especially Penn State football and the Philadelphia Phillies. He loved gardening and enjoyed baking and making jellies and jams.
He is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Margaret T. (Sidun) Rokus; two daughters, Margaret M. Williams and husband Melvin of Broomall, Pennsylvania, and JoAnn Hopkins and husband Richard of Hagerstown, Maryland; Three grandchildren, Michelle “Micki” Hopkins with Marvin Niece of Lake Stevens, Washington, Adam Hopkins and wife Lauren and great-grandchildren Madison and Gavan of Hagerstown, Maryland, and Andrew Hopkins and wife Holly and great-grandchildren Amelia, Lillian and Isaac of Hagerstown, Maryland; and a brother Nicholas Sedon of Hazelton, Pennsylvania. In addition to Al’s parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Frank Rokus, John Rokus, Edward Rokus, William Sedon, John Sedon, George Sedon, and Michael Sedon; and one sister Anna (Sedon) Yanatti.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Boulevard North in Hagerstown, Maryland from 6 to 8 pm.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 224 West Washington Street in Hagerstown, Maryland at 10 am on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 with Rev. Larry Adamczyk as celebrant. Interment to follow at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made in Al’s name to the Parkinson’s Foundation at Parkinson.org.
