David I. Barr of Hagerstown, MD passed away at Meritus Medical Center on September 6, 2017. He was a resident of Diakon Village of Robinwood in Hagerstown. He was born July 8, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of David A. and Jessie Inglis Barr. He graduated from Boston High School of Commerce, served in the US Marine Corps during World War II, attended Boston University, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1948. He attended the University of Maryland and George Washington University for graduate studies. 
 
Dave taught and coached at Frederick High School in the early 1950’s. He taught and coached at Saint James School for over 40 years. While at Saint James School, he served as teacher, coach, Dean of Students, and Athletic Director. He was a member of the Williamsport Lions Club, the Washington County Parks and Recreation Board, and Elks Club 378. He ran the regionally renowned Potomac Basketball Camp along with his good friend Kevin Murphy. He was inducted into the Saint James School Kerfoot Society for Outstanding Teaching and the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame. 
 
Dave was preceded in death by his wife Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Barr and his brother Robert A. Barr. Dave is survived by daughter Marsha Inglis Garner and husband Robert of McCormick, SC; daughter Ruth Osik Weaver and husband Joel of Smithsburg, MD;  son Scott A. Barr and wife Alice of Hagerstown, MD; his grandchildren James Garner and wife Courtney of Macon, GA; David Ian Osik of Smithsburg, MD;  Jordan Barr of Manhattan Beach, CA; Ellen Barr of Gaithersburg, MD; four great grandchildren, Brooks Garner, Annie Garner, Lizzie Garner of Macon, GA and Liam Bailey of Smithsburg, MD; and spiritual sons Charles G. (Chick) Meehan and wife Kathy of Saint James, MD; and Stuart Dunnan of Saint James, MD. Dave is also survived by thousands of students he taught, mentored, and coached at Saint James School. 
 
Dave lived his life with a strong Christian faith, and he dedicated his life to teaching, coaching, mentoring children. After retiring from teaching, he continued a life of unwavering love and kindness to everyone he met and touched.  
 
Visitation with family and friends will be held at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD, on Sunday, September, 10th from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM and a memorial service will be held at Saint James School Chapel on Monday, September 11th, at 11 AM. 
 
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Saint James School for the Dave and Betty Barr Scholarship Fund, c/o Saint James School, 17641 College Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
