Funeral: Friday, August 25, 2017 at 1:00 pm

Dr. Richard Lowell "Ric" Behan, DDS, 75, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2017 at his home with his wife, Carol, by his side.

Richard was born in Woodside, L.I, NY on June 13, 1942, the son of John Howard "Dick" and Lillian "Lylan" Behan. Several years later, the family moved to East Islip, L.I., NY, where he spent his childhood and teenage years.
After graduation from East Islip High School, Ric attended Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. He then continued his education, graduating from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1967 with a DDS degree. He concluded his education in the Oral and Maxillofacial Program, also at the University of Maryland.
In 1970, Ric set up his private practice in Hagerstown. In 1975, Dr. Joseph Wiesenbaugh and Dr. Richard Behan joined their professional practices of Oral and Facial Surgery which continued for 17 years. Upon Dr. Wiesenbaugh's retirement in 1992, Dr. Richard Kramer joined the practice, followed by Dr. Gary Koterwas until the present with offices on Leitersburg Pike in Hagerstown, MD and Parkwood Drive in Chambersburg, PA.
Dr. Behan served on the staff of three area hospitals, Chambersburg, Waynesboro and Washington County, was Chief of Surgery of Washington County Hospital 1989-1991, and served on trauma call for 33 years.
Ric was a member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church, the Washington County Dental Society, American Board of Oral Surgery ABOS, American Assoc. Maxillofacial Surgery AAMOS, Cumberland Valley Dental Society. He was a charter member to date of the Rotary Club of Long Meadow and a multi Paul Harris member.
Ric also was a member of the Fountainhead Country Club of Hagerstown, LaPlaya Golf Club of Naples, FL and two private clubs: the North Country Rod and Gun Club and the Conewago Conservationist Fishing Club. He was also a long-time member of the Maryland Terrapin Club. Ric was also an avid supporter of the BSA all his life, as he had earned his Eagle Rank at the early age of 13.
Away from the office, Ric was very much the outdoorsman. Golfing, fishing and hunting were his interests. He was an avid golfer, starting early as a member of his high school and college teams. In 1967, he joined Fountainhead Country Club. Spring started with the State Team Matches followed by a full season of golf with the Wednesday afternoon gang, Member-Guests and always weekend play. In winter months, Ric would travel south to Naples, FL to play at his southern club, LaPlaya. In later years, Ric joined the American Senior Golf Assoc. which allowed him to enjoy many rounds of golf on some of the top courses both in the U.S and internationally.
The sport of fishing was also part of Ric's life. From childhood, through schools and adult life, he was always able to find water to cast a line. Being a charter boat owner in Oregon Inlet, Nags Head, NC, led to many fishing trips. Being invited to join The Bahamas Billfish Team led to 10 years of fishing the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Many trips to Panama and Costa Rica were also enjoyed. Fishing for marlin in the ocean, salmon fishing in Vancouver or fly fishing for trout at his private clubs in PA, Ric was happy with a rod in hand. His last fishing trip was to Costa Rica with his grandchildren to introduce them to his love of fishing. And even when the snow fell, Ric and Carol would uncover their snowmobiles for miles of fun.
Ric is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carol B. Behan and three children, Robin Jones Pitsnogle and her husband, Marty of Hagerstown, MD, Brendon Behan and his wife, Susan of Ellicott City, MD and Brian Jones of Washington DC. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Cole Pitsnogle, Carly Pitsnogle and Alec Behan. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Lynne Behan Palladino and her husband, Anthony of Naples, FL and nephew, Dean and his wife, Marnee and children, Kaela and Ella Palladino. In addition to his parents, Ric was predeceased by his loving mother-in-law, Lois Brand and nephew Damon A. Palladino.
The family would like to thank the John R. Marsh Cancer Center and Hospice of Washington County for their compassionate care and support to him and his family in their final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made in Ric's name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or John R. Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Rd., Suite 129, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
